CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Are you sure you’re going to be okay?” said Lizzie, after a late breakfast.

“I’m going to be fine.” Despite her mild anxiety, Megan stuck up a thumb and put on a smile. “I’ve got an alarm I know how to set, thanks to Shaun, an amazing warrior cat, someone’s on their way to fix the door, and Des is on his way round. How much safer could a girl be?”

“Well, if you’re sure, we’d better get going,” said Lizzie, reluctantly.

Megan gave her sister a hug. “Drive carefully – the wind’s really getting up. I’ll speak to you soon.”

“But I showed you twice how to set the alarm,” said Des, his arms folded and a foot tapping. “You should have said you didn’t understand.”

“Well, I thought I did until I tried to explain it to Lizzie,” said Megan, rolling her hair into a bun and sticking a pen through it to hold it up. “Anyway, I know now. And the police don’t think it’s got anything to do with the murders, so I feel a lot calmer about it.” She pushed her shoulder against the newly-fixed door a few times. “And nothing’s going to get through this in a hurry.”

Des gave a little snort and shook his head. “Come on. Let’s go and see Gerald.”

Des leaned forward and studied the sky. “Looks like rain.”

“I hope not. It’s bad enough driving in this wind,” said Megan, as she fought to keep the little mini on the right side of the road, her knuckles white from gripping the steering wheel so tight.

By the time they got to Castle Manor, the wind had dropped and the sun had made a late appearance through the low cloud.

“Gerald told us to go straight through to the garden.” Dear, dear, dear, someone’s made a right mess of this, haven’t they?” He pointed at the broken lock in the sturdy wooden gate.

They found Gerald wheeling a barrow full of leaves and broken branches to the compost heap. Contrary to how Megan imagined him to be, and Natalie Castle’s description that Gerald McGuire was "about a hundred years old”, he looked to be in his sixties, and was tall and upright with broad shoulders and strong arms. He pushed and emptied the heavy barrow with ease before wheeling it back to where Des and Megan stood.

“Nice to meet you,” he said, with a nod, and wiped his hand down the front of his shirt before shaking Megan’s hand with a firm grasp.

“Likewise,” said Megan, smiling at the man with a twinkle in his brown eyes, and a gap where his two front teeth had once resided.

“Someone did a good job on that gate, didn’t they?” said Des.

Gerald nodded. “The police have given me the okay to get it repaired, so that’s the next job on my list.” He looked at the sky. “That wind’s made a right mess of things. Brought down the branches on half the trees, it has. This is the fourth barrow I’ve cleared. And there’s rain on the way by the look of those clouds, maybe even a storm.
